Postcards from a Quiet Lawn in Napa

When my mother and I arrived in Napa early Saturday morning, we were greeted by the backdrop of vineyards and California hills. Living just an hour and a half from wine country, you'd think I'd been to Napa many times, but until Isla & Saige I never actually had. Isla & Saige has brought me back a few times now, and I don't think I'll ever tire of the drive in.

We set up at the Carneros Resort and Spa, inside COOP's courtyard, a wide green lawn framed by a garden that feeds the restaurant next door, with life-size chess and bouchée ball set up for guests to play. It felt less like a shop and more like a dream backyard we borrowed for the weekend.

Saturday didn't go how we expected. Despite the resort sitting at ninety percent capacity, the lawn stayed quiet, and the day moved slowly until mid-afternoon. Around four, a woman and two little girls stopped at our racks on their way back from the pool. My mother and I are both suckers for kids, probably why she had six of us, and it turned into a long conversation with them and their nanny. The girl’s nanny shared how the trip had been a last-minute one, and they were visiting from Austin for the girls' mother's birthday, wine country chosen because of a friend who lived nearby. Our conversation drifted to travel, to the family's favorite places, and we learned one of the girls was named after a destination that had become the family's place. By the time they wandered off, the courtyard had started filling in with locals arriving for dinner.

Our weekend in wine country reminded me a little of Carmel last January, another weekend we expected to be busy that turned out slower than we would've liked. That seems to be becoming a pattern in the shows we choose.

By Sunday afternoon, the lawn had finally caught up to the resort's numbers as guests showed up for Sunday brunch on the patio and stayed after for the ambiance. As the afternoon quieted down we made the call to pack up early. We were ready to be home. We pulled out past the vineyards in the last of the light, already talking about when we'd be back.
